Without a doubt, Vakil Bath in Shiraz is one of the most unique and spectacular historical baths in Iran and Shiraz, and is famous among tourists for its unique architecture, carvings, and decorative motifs. Today, this beautiful bath has become an anthropological museum, and by entering it, you can learn more about the customs, clothing, and culture of the ancient people of Shiraz
The clever architecture of Vakil Bath is characterized by a small entrance door, a vestibule below ground level, and an angled corridor that prevented cold air from entering the bath and hot air from leaving the bath. Other unique features include the use of lime on the ceiling and walls, which prevented moisture from affecting it and destroying it. If lime were not used, the durability of the decorations would decrease and it would collapse in a short time
How was Vakil Bath heated
The Vakil bathhouse has a stone floor that retains heat for a longer period of time. The bathhouse was heated by narrow, channel-like corridors that circulated heat and steam throughout the bathhouse. In the past, people walked barefoot in the bathhouse, and the floor heating system prevented the cold of the stone from reaching the body. The treasury with two large boilers is located in the southern part of the bathhouse, which heated the water needed for bathing
Other parts of the bathhouse include the golkhan or toon, which was located under the treasury and consisted of a corridor, a chamber, and a copper vessel. Under the copper vessel, there was a chamber that led out of the bathhouse through a corridor. The “ton-tab” was responsible for placing firewood and bushes in the toon at regular intervals so that the water in the treasury would stay warm. The catwalks on the floor of the bath allowed the smoke from the burning of the tun to escape through the chimney. The catwalks also helped to heat the floor of the bath
The cowshed was also located in the northeast of the bath and consisted of a sloping path used to draw water from the well with the help of cows
