Chitgar Lake is an artificial lake located in the northern part of Chitgar Forest Park in District 22 of Tehran. Its official name is Lake of the Martyrs of the Persian Gulf. The total area of the complex (lake + surrounding recreational areas) is about 250 hectares: roughly 130 hectares of water and about 120 hectares of beach and recreational area.
History and Construction
The idea of building Chitgar Lake dates back to the comprehensive plan of Tehran, with drafts mentioned as early as the 1960s. Serious implementation began in the 2000s. Groundbreaking for construction took place around 2010. Phase one of the lake officially opened on May 5, 2013.
Water Supply and Capacity
About 80% of the lake’s water comes from the Kan River, and the remaining 20% from surface runoff in the area. The lake has a significant capacity for water management in the region. Some studies suggest its capacity could reach 35 million cubic meters of water.
:Technical Specifications Water surface area
approximately 130 hectares. Depth: near the edges, 1.5–2 meters; in the center, up to 9.5 meters. Length: about 1,650 meters. Excavation volume: over 869,000 cubic meters of soil removed during construction.
Environmental and Urban Roles
Chitgar Lake is more than just a recreational project; it has multiple engineering and environmental purposes
Urban Climate Moderation
With prevailing west–east winds in Tehran, the large water surface increases humidity and helps cool the area
Groundwater Recharge
Part of the lake’s water contributes to local groundwater, important in a city facing water stress
Green and Recreational Space
Located adjacent to Chitgar Forest Park, the combination creates a major recreational ecosystem in western Tehran
Location and Access
Situated in District 22 of Tehran. Bounded by Hemmat Highway to the north, Azadegan Highway to the east, and Chitgar Forest Park to the south. Multiple entrances provide access to different parts of the lake and beach
:Recreational Facilities
Chitgar Lake is designed as a recreational hub for Tehran citizens
Boating: Popular activity, with pedal and motor boats available.
Other Water Activities: Reports of thrill activities like bungee jumping.
Amusement Park: Facilities for children and families near the lake.
Green Spaces and Walking Paths: Trails and resting areas along the shoreline.
Urban Breathing Space: Contributes to local temperature moderation and humidity
:Challenges and Criticisms
Like many large urban projects, Chitgar Lake faces some criticisms
Architectural / Landscape Concerns
Some argue the combination of deep water and nearby buildings may create visual or functional challenge
Water Supply and Sustainability
Reliance on Kan River and surface runoff could be problematic during droughts. Maintenance of such a large water volume requires careful management (treatment, circulation, evaporation control).
Environmental Concerns
Critics worry the project may function more as a recreational lake than a natural ecosystem. Energy costs for pumping and water treatment are additional concerns
Urban and Tourism Importance
Chitgar Lake has become one of Tehran’s major tourist attractions, especially for aquatic recreation. Combined with Chitgar Park, green spaces, walking paths, and recreational facilities, it is an attractive spot for picnics, sports, and leisure. Properly managed, the lake can positively impact local climate, humidity, and urban cooling.
Summary
Chitgar Lake is a large engineering project with recreational, environmental, and urban benefitsDespite its advantages, challenges include sustainable water supply, maintenance, and environmental management , For a large and densely populated city like Tehran, such projects can significantly enhance quality of urban life and provide recreational and natural spaces when properly managed
