Behzadan Pour Vandad Hormozd, known as Abu Muslim Khurasani (718–755 AD), was an Iranian military commander and the leader of the Black-Clad Movement in Khurasan who succeeded in overthrowing the Umayyad Caliphate and establishing the Abbasid Caliphate. His original name was Behzadan Pour Vandidad or Vandad (son of Vandad), which he changed to Abdul Rahman at the suggestion of Ibrahim al-Imam, one of the prominent figures of the Abbasids, and by his order, he set off for Khurasan to take on the leadership of the anti-Umayyad movement in this region. Some Islamic scholars believe that the life of Abu Muslim Khorasani served as an initial model in the preparation of the prophetic biographies (the biography of Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam). In particular, the resemblance of the battles of Abu Muslim, his followers, and his daughter Fatima (referring to Abu Muslim’s daughter) to the story of Muhammad is pointed out.Opinions about Abu Muslim’s ultimate goal in the Abbasid revolution are varied. Some claim that he aspired to establish a national Iranian government and that by dressing himself in the garb of religious rebellion, he fought against the Umayyads in order to take control of the caliphate.
