Jupiter or Jove, in Roman mythology, is the god of gods or the king of gods. He is also considered the god of the sky and the god of heavenly thunder (the god of lightning). His counterpart in Greek mythology is Zeus. He was also referred to as Jove or Iupiter, or Dies Pater, and he is praised as Optimus Maximus, meaning “the best and greatest father god,” and acknowledged as the protective deity of Rome.Jupiter is also considered the father of Mars (the god of war), and this child was born from his marriage to Juno.Jupiter was the great god [and the god of gods] and over time became the supreme deity of the confederation of forty-nine Latin cities, and his sanctuary became the site for celebrating spring and autumn festivals. Jupiter is the equivalent of Zeus in Greece, who was later referred to by the Romans by this name. Jupiter was a love-struck deity who governed the world from his golden throne atop Mount Olympus.
