Rustam Suren Pahlavi, known and famous as Surena, was born in 82 BC in Sistan, the territory of the Suren family, and died in 53 BC.

Surena or Suren (Rustam Suren Pahlavi) (82–53 BC) was an Iranian politician and general, and the head of the Suren family during the Parthian era. Despite his short life, he had a special reputation among the ancient people. Plutarch referred to Surena as the tallest and most handsome man of his time.Surena was from the House of Suren, one of the seven famous families of the Arsacid era, whose territory was located in Sistan. The word Suren in Middle Persian means powerful, and this family was responsible for the hereditary crowning of the Parthian king. Ancient historians have described Surena as a tall, handsome commander with long hair, wise, powerful, warrior-like, and courageous. Historical sources, due to his belonging to the House of Suren, have regarded him as unparalleled in power and bravery.Surena, in terms of wealth and fame, was ranked just after the Parthian king, and during the coronation of the king, due to his familial position in the House of Surena, he was the only one permitted to fasten the royal belt for the king. He also played a significant role in the political developments of his era due to uniting the people of Sistan to support the Parthian king in the war against Rome.
