- Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is one of the historical mosques of Iran and the well-known mosques of Isfahan, built during the Safavid era. This mosque is Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque located on the eastern side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square, opposite the Ali Qapu Mansion, and in the neighborhood of the Imam Mosque. It is a masterpiece of architecture and tile work of the 11th century AH and a work registered in the list of national monuments of Iran and UNESCO. It has one of the most beautiful domes in the world.
The construction of this beautiful mosque took 18 years and it has one of the most beautiful domes in the world. - Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is pink at dawn, creamy at noon, and brick-like at sunset.
The entrance door is made of plane wood. In fact, the combination of high resistance and durability, stability against moisture, abundance and easy access, good workability, and the appearance of plane wood was one of the best options for the door. This 2-leaf wooden door dates back to about 400 years ago - Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque was a mosque exclusively for the king and the royal family, and ordinary people were not allowed to pass through it, and in fact, ordinary people never used it. For this reason, it can be said that the presence or absence of a minaret was not important in the construction of this mosque, and this mosque does not have a minaret
- To maintain the symmetry of the square structure, it was not possible to build a courtyard facing the Qibla. For this reason, the entrance to Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque consists of 4 steps that lead you to the entrance hall and finally to the beautiful dome of the mosque.
- The entrance space has two yellow marble platforms on both sides, where many people sit and take pictures. The marble wall of the entrance to the mosque reaches almost from the ground to the waist, and then the blue sea of tiles begins. In fact, the beauty of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque begins at its entrance
- After the lighting of the Naqsh-e Jahan square, we suddenly enter the semi-dark space of the corridor. The corridor is lit by lattice windows on the right side of the corridor, and with the little light it creates, it gives us the opportunity to see the beautiful tiles of the corridor, where blue and green colors dance as our eyes get used to the low light.
- In the construction of the mosque, a corridor has been created from the entrance to the bottom of the dome, which adjusts the direction of the mosque to the Qiblah with a rotation at an angle of 45 degrees and another rotation at an angle of 90 degrees.
- This rotation has been created with such elegance in the structure of the mosque that no trace of it is visible on the exterior of the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque. If you look at the mosque from the exterior, the appearance of the mosque is north-south, but in reality, the rotation of the corridor has caused the interior of the mosque to be located in a southwest-northeast direction.
- The dome of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is made of two shells and its top is 32 meters above the ground. It is interesting to know that if the height of the dome was higher than its current size, sunlight would not penetrate the interior of the mosque in this way.
- There are 16 windows around the dome of the mosque, which are designed as lattice networks (grills) with geometric and Islamic designs that allow sunlight to enter the interior in a beautiful and gentle way and also have an aesthetic role. 4 other windows are located on the sides of the walls, and the total number of windows in Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is twenty.
The peacock pattern on the Sheikh Lotfollah dome has been created with such elegance that it has become one of the wonders of the mosque. It is interesting to know that the peacock feathers are created by the light that enters the space from the arch of the mosque, and you should not expect to see a complete pattern of a real peacock in your mind.
This rare and lovely peacock rests at the highest point of the dome, and only during certain hours of the day, its luminous feathers flow like a waterfall of light over the beautiful dome of Sheikh Lotfollah. - In addition to its historical and religious value, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is world-renowned for its architecture. What distinguishes this mosque from other mosques of that era is its different architectural plan and its unique tiling, mosaics, and decorations. This mosque has no courtyard or minaret, and the play of light and color on the interior and exterior of the dome brings many surprises.
- The play of light on the dome of the mosque is such that the dome rotates around itself during the day, giving the space a deep solitude and pleasant peace.
- Arthur Pope, an American historian, said this about the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque:
“It is difficult to consider this work the product of human hands.” - “There is not the slightest weakness in this building, the dimensions are very appropriate, the plan is very strong and beautiful, and in short, it is a compromise between a world of passion and excitement and silence and magnificent peace that represents a rich aesthetic taste and can have no source other than religious faith and heavenly inspiration
