Bibi Maryam Bakhtiari (born 1874 in the Bakhtiari region – died 1937 in Isfahan), known as Sardar Maryam Bakhtiari, was an Iranian writer and an active woman in the Constitutional Revolution. Bibi Maryam’s family was considered one of the most influential families in Iran during the Qajar era. Her father, Hossein Qoli Khan Ilkhani (one of the chieftains of the Bakhtiari tribe), and her brothers;Aliqoli Khan Sardar As’ad (one of the leaders of the Constitutional Revolution) and Najaf Qoli Samasam al-Saltaneh (Prime Minister of Iran for two terms), along with his cousins, were recognized figures of the Qajar and Pahlavi eras. He was the mother of Alimardan Khan Bakhtiari. Bibi Maryam was one of the pioneers of women’s rights demands and a defender of the national interests of Iran during World War I.
Biography
Bibi Maryam Bakhtiari, daughter of Hossein Qoli Khan Ilkhani, was born in 1874 in the Bakhtiari region. She was one of the educated and enlightened women of her time, who, alongside the Constitutional Revolution, stood up for women’s rights. She learned military tactics and leadership from her father and brothers and applied these teachings during the battles of the Constitutional Revolution;In the conquest of Tehran and also the conquest of Isfahan, as well as in World War I, he made use of it. He utilized the material and spiritual resources of his family to form a regiment of Bakhtiari cavalry to fight against the Russian and British occupiers in World War I
