Highlights

  • Gilan is one of the northern provinces of Iran, centered in Rasht.The nature of Gilan is covered in forests and has a mild and humid climate. This province includes the green areas of the northwest regions of the Alborz mountain range and the western part of the southern shores of the Caspian Sea.
  • More than 40 rivers flow in Gilan, the most important of which is Sefidrood. Other significant rivers in Gilan include Astara Chay, Shafarood, Chamkhaleh River, and Khalkai.
  • Rasht, with 46 percent of the total population of the province, is the center and the most populous city in the north of the country, as well as the eleventh most populous city in Iran. Other populous cities in this province, in order, include Bandar Anzali (the most important Iranian port on the Caspian Sea), Lahijan, Langrud, Talesh, Bandar Astara, Soume'eh Sara, Astaneh Ashrafiyeh, Rudsar, and Fuman.
  • Among the tourist attractions in this region are the Chamakhal Beach, Masuleh, the city of Astara, Rudkhan Castle, Visadar Waterfall, Dilman, Masal, Latun Waterfall, Damash, the city of Langeroud, and Lahijan, etc.
  • Masuleh: The mountainous and pleasant town of Masuleh, with an area of 100 hectares, is located 36 kilometers to the west and southwest of the city of Fouman. This highest and also smallest city in Gilan, with its historical and cultural attractions, especially its unique traditional architecture, captivates the eyes of every visitor and attracts many tourists. This unique monument, with its pleasant climate and traditional terraced houses, holds high architectural value and, for this reason, was registered in the list of national heritage sites of Iran in 1975 and recently included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
  • Anzali Lagoon, or Anzali Wetland, with an area of about 20,000 hectares, is located in the north of Iran, in Gilan province, near Anzali port. The water surface of the lagoon is situated in Anzali County. This lagoon is one of the most important and largest natural habitats for wildlife in Iran. Every year, Anzali Lagoon welcomes a large number of birds that migrate to Iran from neighboring northern countries.
  • Roodkhan Castle, also known as Hasanami Castle, is a fortress from the Sasanian Empire built on the forested heights of Fuman County in the village of Roodkhan. It covers an area of 2.6 hectares and features 65 towers, walls, and a wall length of 1500 meters. Roodkhan Castle is located 30 kilometers from the city of Fuman. The villagers of Roodkhan speak Talshi. Some experts believe that the castle was built during the Sasanian period, coinciding with the Arab invasion of Iran.
  • Laton Waterfall: Laton Waterfall is located 15 kilometers south of Astara County, in the city of Lundeveil, in the village of Koteh Kumeh, Gilan Province. The approximate height of Laton Waterfall is 105 meters, making it the tallest waterfall in Iran. This waterfall was registered in the list of national heritage of Iran in 2020
  • Heiran Pass :Among all the attractions of Gilan Province, it can be said that Hirkan Pass is one of the most frequented routes in this province and has significant strategic and tourism importance for the residents of this northern province of the country. This pass is located along the route between the communication road of Astara and Ardabil, reaching one side to a forest and the other to a relatively deep valley. This pass has a length of about 35 kilometers and is recognized as one of the most beautiful routes in Iran. Among the sights of Hirkan Pass are the Fandoglu Forest, the village of Hirkan, and the Shindan Castle.
  • Masal : is a city in the west of Gilan province, located next to the Talesh mountains. This city is the center of Masal County. Masal is close to the cities of Soume'eh Sara and Fuman and is also near the city of Khalkhal in Ardabil province.
