Hormozd IV or Hormazd IV, mentioned in the Shahnameh, was the Shahanshah of Iran and Aniran from the Sasanian dynasty in Iran-Shahr from 579 to 590 AD. He ascended to the throne after his father, Khosrow I the Just. In Iranian and Islamic sources, after the fall of Iran-Shahr, he is referred to as a just king. One of the most significant events of the reign of Hormizd IV was the attack of the Gokturks on the eastern provinces of the Sassanian Empire. However, Bahram Chobin, the famous Iranian general, dealt them a severe defeat in battle. This event brought fame to Bahram, which ultimately aroused the envy of Hormizd, and he stripped Bahram of his title of Spahbed. Hormizd’s decision incited the wrath of Bahram Chobin, and he rebelled.
Given Bahram’s popularity among the soldiers and Hormoz’s unpopularity among the nobles, Bahram Chobin’s rebellion was supported by the army and the court’s dignitaries. Bahram appointed a new espahbod for Khorasan and set out towards Ctesiphon. Hormoz sent Izadgushnasp to confront Bahram, but he was assassinated in Hamadan by one of his close associates.
