Bozorgmehr Bokhtagan (6th century AD), referred to as Bozorgmehr the Sage, was the son of Sokhra and the minister of Khosrow Anushirvan, the king of the Sasanian Empire. He was the head of the special advisors of the court, the personal guard of the king, and the head of the court.Farsi and Arabic sources describe him as having exceptional wisdom and wise counsel.According to Ferdowsi and Tha’alibi, Bozorgmehr was called to the court of Anushirvan while he was studying in Merv. Anushirvan asked him to interpret his dream; and Bozorgmehr correctly accomplished this task. This led to Bozorgmehr being appointed as the king’s advisor and minister. Unraveling the secret of chess was Bozorgmehr’s most significant achievement as a minister.Islamic period sources describe Bozorgmehr as a minister, scholar, national hero, possessor of undiscovered secrets, and knowledgeable in the fields of medicine and astronomy, which caused shame to the governments of India and Rome in the face of Iran. The highest moral teachings in the works of Iranian writers are attributed to Bozorgmehr through various narratives.
